In Matthew 4:1-11, what is the devil trying to do with Jesus? What tactics does Jesus use to conquer Satan?

Jesus was fasting to prepare himself spiritually for the ministry he was about to start on. Fasting was a way for Jesus to emphasize how, as a human being, he had to rely on God for his very existence. Jesus was using his time in the desert to get closer to God so that he would have the strength to do the will of his Father.
The devil didn't want Jesus to rely on God but wanted to get Jesus on his side. He tried to tempt Jesus by taking advantage of his physically weakened state and suggesting ways that Jesus could satisfy his desires. Satan even used scripture to try to get Jesus to give in and also reminded Jesus that he was God's son so this would justify Jesus using his power to satisfy his earthly desires.
Jesus used scripture to rebuke the devil. He also forcefully told Satan to go away and then got down to basics by quoting scripture that says to worship and serve only God.
